"Wonder Woman" continues to face bans in the Middle East, North Africa
The film has faced controversy in Muslim countries owing to Gadot's Israeli heritage.
(Web Desk) - Box office hit, “Wonder Woman” has been a huge success, breaking records along the way ever since its release on 31st May. But the movie starring the Israeli-born Hollywood actress, Gal Gadot, hasn’t received the warmest of receptions in many Middle-Eastern and North-African countries owing primarily to Gadot’s Israeli heritage.
Lebanon became the first country to outright ban the movie last week, and now according to reports coming in from Jerusalem, it has been removed from a film festival in Algeria. Tunisia is also reported to have banned the film from cinemas.
Seeing other countries banning the film, the Jordanian government too, is mulling over whether or not it should allow the film to be screened. A statement from one Jordanian campaign stated: “We remind the Jordanians of their obligation to boycott the film, and we refuse to be partners to the crimes of the Zionists and to increase their profits from this film. The Arab audience will not be involved in projects that represent Zionism and the Israeli army.”
The actress served in the Israeli Defense Forces, a requirement of all Israeli citizens when they reach the age of 18, and has been an advocate for Israel. She also praised the defense force’s military actions in Gaza in 2014 in a Facebook post at the time; an act that was protested by the general public on a massive scale.
