Lollywood celebrates 23rd anniversary of "Malka-i-Jazbat" Nayyar Sultana

Nayyar Sultana portrayed the tragic characters of film with an effortless style.

LAHORE (WebDesk) – Pakistan’s renowned and veteran actress of Lollywood’s golden age Nayyar Sultana’s 23rd anniversary will be celebrated on Tuesday. Popularly known as “Malka-i-Jazbat”, Sultana departed from this world on the 27th of October 1992. With leading roles in commercially successful movies like ‘Saath Laakh’ which released in 1957, the 1959 hit  Mazloom  ,  Saheli  which released in 1960 and  Baaji  which released in 1963, Sultana has remained as the Queen of Emotions throughout the years. Sultana scritically acclaimed roles in these box office hit movies left her lasting impression on Lollywood, perfomances of which are still revered by the nation today.

Sultana was born Tayyaba Bano in Aligarh in 1937 into a Muslim household. Sultana graduated from the Women’s College, Aligarh. Sultana’s family left for Karachi after independence of Pakistan in 1947. She stepped into the world of movies in 1955 with her debut role in Anwar Kamal Pasha’s ‘Qatil’ as a supporting actor. Her mesmerizing performance quickly struck a chord with the audience and Sultana was signed up as lead actor for numerous films. She was casted as second lead in Humayun Mirza’s  Intikhaab . It was at this point that she took on her stage name “Nayyar Sultana” which stuck with her celebrity persona for more than 40 years.

Sultana married the acclaimed romantic hero Darpan after which time she took a brief break from acting only to make an entry again into the film industry in the 1960’s. However the movies ‘Ek Musafir Ek Haseena’, ‘Meri Bhabi’, ‘Hamjoli’ and ‘Azmat’ failed to create any breakthroughs at the box office.

Sultana’s last movies that did manage to briefly propel her to stardom once again included S. Sulaiman’s ‘Abhi To Main Jawan Hoon’ and Hassan Tariq’s ‘Mazi Haal Mustaqbil’ and ‘Seeta Maryam Margaret’. Sultana’s last role was in ‘Teen Yakke teen Chhakke’ in 1991.

After her husband’s death in 1981, Sultana ran his recruiting agency till her death in 1992.

Sultana worked in more than a 100 movies and was nominated for numerous awards for her outstanding performance.

Sultana portrayed the tragic character roles with an effortless style and has truly earned the title of ‘Malika-i-Jazbat’ the equivalent of which has yet to be matched.
