'Tragedy king of Bollywood' Dilip Kumar turns 91

Dilip Kumar is Bollywood’s first superstar who hails from Pakistan.

NEW DELHI (Dunya News) - Veteran actor Dilip Kumar known as the 'tragedy king of Bollywood' celebrates his 91st birthday on Wednesday.

Born as Muhammad Yousuf Khan in Peshawar, Pakistan, Dilip Kumar was touted as the 'ultimate method actor' by Oscar winning director Satyajit Ray. His debut movie ‘Jwar Bhata’ did not do too well at the box office, and finally ‘Jugnu’ released in 1947 kick started his career.

But the industry remembers him in the role of shahzada Salim in Asif's epic historical film 'Mughal-e-Azam'. The movie is one of the highest grossing movies in the history of Bollywood. Another movie he is remembered for is `Devdas`, his role and acting style is still emulated by many stars including superstar Shah Rukh
Khan.

He has got the Guinness World Record for winning the maximum number of awards by an Indian actor, with 8 Filmfare awards for Best Actor amongst others.

Dilip Sahab was honoured with the Padma Bhushan award in 1991 and the Dada Saheb Phalke award in 1994 for his contribution to Indian cinema.

He was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Zee Cine Awards in 1998.
