Summary

US First Lady Michelle Obama and chat show host Oprah Winfrey were the stars at a party thrown by the Chicago Olympic bid committee in Copenhagen. Winfrey introduced the president's wife who told guests: When I looked at the bid initially I was overwhelmed by what a beautiful concept was presented. Describing the proposed development as an athletes' paradise she said the competitors would be staying in the city centre, not more than 15 minutes from the Games facilities. Making reference to the windy City's notorious weather she went on to joke: We will have it at a time in the city's climate when it'll actually be nice. Chicago, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo are the four candidates for the 2016 Olympics. The winner will be announced by IOC president Jacques Rogge shortly after 1630 GMT on Friday after a day of presentations and voting by more than 100 IOC members. London bookmakers made Chicago the favourites after Monday's announcement that President Obama would fly in on Friday to join his wife in making the Chicago presentation.
