Rio de Janeiro kicks off in Brazil

The 11th annual Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival (Festival do Rio) has kicked off with a program of 310 films from 60 countries to screen. The festival opened with Ang Lees Taking Woodstock. The opening night guest of honor will be French actress Jeanne Moreau who will also be opening Rios Focus on France series, which celebrates a year of Fre-nch cultural activity in Brazil. The festival will close with the Brazilian premiere of Quentin Tarantinos Inglourious Basterds. Among the international films screening in the World Panorama section are Claire Denis White Material, Michael Hanekes The White Ribbon, Werner Herzogs Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, Alain Resnais Wild Grass, and Catherine Breillats Bluebeard. The festival will also feature a tribute to actress Isabelle Huppert, an LGBT section called Gay World, and midnight screenings of films.
