Man pleads not guilty to killing British tourist in Cyprus
The court adjourned the case until January 29 and ordered the defendant be remanded in custody.
LONDON (AFP) - A 35-year-old man pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to murdering a British tourist in Cyprus, in an alleged premeditated hit-and-run attack which also seriously injured a second victim.
The accused appeared at the criminal court in the coastal city of Paphos, southwest Cyprus, where he denied killing 39-year-old Robert Birch.
The Welsh tourist, who was known as Charlie, had been on holiday with his family when he was hit by a car north of Paphos in the early hours of June 24.
A 32-year-old British man who had been walking with Birch suffered serious injuries and the defendant on Wednesday pleaded not guilty to his attempted murder.
Police apprehended the suspect after his car was found dumped in the sea, while a woman was also arrested but later released without charge.
The court adjourned the case until January 29 and ordered the defendant be remanded in custody.
