ACAPULCO (AFP) - Two priests and a primary school teacher were shot dead Monday in the violent Mexican state of Guerrero as they returned home from a village dance, authorities said.

Another four people were wounded when gunmen opened fire on the group’s car in the early morning hours on the highway between the towns of Taxco and Iguala, the southern state’s security ministry said.

"A black vehicle blocked the road and several suspects immediately opened fire" on the other car, it said.

Police found the black vehicle abandoned 1.5 kilometers (about a mile) away with a rifle strap inside.

The local Catholic archdiocese condemned the killing, saying it "has left our entire community in mourning" and calling on authorities to find those responsible.

Attacks on priests have surged in predominantly Catholic Mexico in recent years. Around 20 have been killed since 2013, according to the Multimedial Catholic Center.

Most of the violence has been in states caught up in turf wars between powerful drug cartels, including Guerrero.
