Shaw leads India's reply with brisk fifty

HYDERABAD (AFP) - Teenage opener Prithvi Shaw hit a quickfire half-century to lead India’s strong first innings reply after paceman Umesh Yadav starred with the ball against West Indies in the second Test on Friday.
India were 80 for one at lunch with Shaw, on 52, and Cheteshwar Pujara, on 9, at the crease.
The hosts trail by 231 runs in response to West Indies’ first innings score of 311.
Yadav returned career-best figures of 6-88 and picked all the three West Indies wickets in the morning session after the tourists started on their overnight score of 295-7.
In reply the 18-year-old Shaw, who became the youngest Indian batsman to score a century on debut in the first West Indies Test in Rajkot, hit 8 fours and 1 six in his 42-ball stay so far.
Skipper Jason Holder bowled Lokesh Rahul for four after the struggling opener dragged a length deliver on to his stumps.
Shaw, who survived a dropped catch at first slip off spinner Jomel Warrican on 45, went to his 50 in just 39 deliveries. He made 134 in India’s big opening win in Rajkot.
Earlier overnight batsman Roston Chase top-scored with 106.
Chase, who started the day on 98, recorded his fourth Test hundred before being bowled by Yadav.
Yadav soon got Shannon Gabriel on the very next ball to become the first Indian quick to get six wickets on home soil after Javagal Srinath’s 6-45 against New Zealand at Mohali in 1999.
Yadav, who had lost his pace partner in debutant Shardul Thakur early on day one, was ably supported by left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who took three wickets.
Thakur suffered a groin strain in just his second over of the match and limped off the ground after bowling 10 deliveries. He was sent for scans and has not returned to the field since.
