(Web Desk) - Pakistan’s impressive victory against India and their eventual triumph in the recently concluded ICC Champions Trophy has been the talk of the town. Seventy two hours into the historic day at The Oval, and the Pakistani fans still can’t believe what they witnessed. To add more to their unparalleled excitement, we look at another unexpected yet impressive triumph of the ‘green team’.

It doesn’t seem a long time ago when the Pakistani team outclassed the Lankan Lions at the Lord’s Cricket Ground, bagging their sole ICC T20 World Cup in the process. But it has been exactly 8 years since the historic day in London.

On this day, in 2009, Pakistan won the World T20 World Cup under the captaincy of Younis Khan.

In the match Pakistan were very clinical with the ball and settled their nerves early on as the team bagged crucial wickets up front. Then 17-year-old fast bowler Mohammad Amir began the Lankan demolition with the all-important wicket of veteran Sri Lankan batsman, Tillikaratne Dilshan who was in hot form heading into the final, after just three deliveries. Veteran Pakistani all-rounder, Abdul Razzaq stepped up to the occasion as he got three important wickets, restricting the Sri Lankans to a humble total of just 138 runs.

The Pakistani team, in response, got off to a flying start led by wicketkeeper batsman, Kamran Akmal and fellow opener, Shahziab Hasan. The two, however, got out cheaply soon after. Pakistan lost both their openers in the space of 9 overs with just 63 on the board. After their dismissal, two experienced campaigners in the form of Shoaib Malik and Shahid Khan Afridi, steadied the ship. Shahid Afridi, in particular played brilliantly and displayed a man of the match performance ultimately guiding his team to a comfortable 8-wicket win in the final.

What followed later on was quite extra ordinary as the team celebrated with great vigor and contagious energy. After collecting the winners’ medal, the entire team lined up before the Pakistani crowd before being handed with the coveted trophy, ultimately, registering their names in Pakistani cricket history.

To mark the importance of this day, the Pakistan Cricket Board posted a video montage on their Facebook page:
