Summary English side opted to ball first after winning the toss at the Oval

LONDON (Dunya News) – While chasing the target of 305, the English side seemed to be in full control of the match right from the very start of the innings despite the early blow in the shape of Jason Roy.

Some superb batting performances one after another from Hales, Root and skipper Morgan that took away the match from Bangladesh as England easily beat Bangladesh by eight wickets in the opening match of ICC Champions Trophy 2017.

JE Root was declared man of the match for his superb knock of 133 runs not out.

Earlier, the English side opted to ball first after winning the toss at the Oval in the opening match of ICC Champions Trophy 2017.

It was an exemplary show of batting skills from one of the finest openers in modern day cricket that created frustrations for the English side just when the proceedings kicked off in the Oval for the opening match of Champions Trophy 2017.

Tamim Iqbal while playing shots all around the wicket helped Bangladesh in compiling a decent total and henceforth giving a fighting figure on the board for the bowlers  to defend.

With 32 runs of last five overs, Morgan and Root seemed to be in hurry to finish things off in style as Mustafizur Rahman offered the opportunity in this regard.

A six and couple of two boundaries in Mustafizur Rahman’s over that was 46th of the innings turned out to be the last nail in the coffin for Bangladesh as sixteen runs came of the over.

Ten runs came of the next over as both the batsmen carried on the innings with excellent temperament.

Overs 45, Score 274/2

Both Morgan and Root seemed to be ideal mates for such sort of situations and rightly so because of such fine career averages under their belt, the target seemed to be an easy one for both of them at this stage.



The dangerous Morgan took charge in the forty first over as he hammered one away towards long-on that sailed along into the stands for a maximum. On the very next ball, Morgan cut delicately towards backward point that squirts away for four more while creating more frustrations for the Bangladesh side.

The match seemed to be slipping away of the Bangladesh’s hands at this stage.

Rubel Hossain came into ball and bowled rather a brilliant over at this stage of the game while conceding just two runs in the 42nd over. 

Meanwhile, Root reached to his well-deserved hundred in the 43rd over and which turned out to be the decisive innings of the match.
Morgan took the charge once more however the bowler this time was opponent’s skipper Mashrafe Mortaza as two consecutive boundaries came this time and fetching 12 runs henceforth.

Mustafizur Rahman bowled yet another good over as only five runs came of the forty fifth over however the breakthrough couldn’t be provided. 

Root joined the party as a six and a boundary was scored in Rubel Hossain’s over and which made rather the equation easier for England.


Overs 40, Score 231/2

With 102 runs required of the last fifteen overs and eight wickets in hand, England were in commanding position as Eoin Morgan and Root were playing shots all around the wicket.

Equation was straight forward as 75 runs were needed of 60 balls with 8 wickets in hand for England.


Overs 35, Score 204/2

The coolest thing about Root is that he carries along with style while putting bad deliveries to boundaries and at the same time, tickling the scoreboard. This time again, he was proving to be a pillar that won’t shake till the very end.



The skipper took charge once again in the thirty third over bowled by Rubel Hossain as pulled one firmly wide of mid-on for a delicate boundary.
In the next over of Mosaddek Hossain, Morgan played brilliantly while launching one towards deep midwicket for four more and thus putting pressure on Bangladesh side in the process of doing so.

Shakib came to bowl in 35th over as five runs came of his over with England 204 for the loss of two wickets just fifteen over before the end of the match.

Overs 30, Score 177/2

England were in commanding position at the half-way stage as they required 168 runs required from 25 overs with nine wickets in hand. The dangerous Alex Hales yet again decided to take charge in Rubel Hussain’s over while lofting one away for a boundary.

Mustafizur Rahman bowled rather a good over as he didn’t provide an opportunity to English batsmen and gave away just 5 runs in the twenty seventh over.

Alex Hales seemed to be in mood as he decided to take charge in Sabbir Rahman’s over while thumping him away for a boundary and immediately followed by a huge six over long-on. However Sabbir came back strongly as Alex Hales tries a slog sweep and handed over a catch to the substitute Sunzamul Islam. Alex Hales got out after scoring a brilliant knock of 95 runs.

The skipper comes into bat and showed some aggression right from the beginning while angling one away for four more.

England were almost six runs per over after the end of 30 overs with skipper Morgan and Root on the crease.


Overs 25, Score 138/1

Hales doesn’t miss the chance when you are offering him to get punished and in this case, the necessary food was provided by Shakib. First he was swept away for a boundary behind square while on the very next ball, lofted straight through the line to clear long-off boundary for a huge maximum.



A total of 15 runs came of the twenty second over. The next three overs were rather good for Bangladesh side as no boundary was scored.

Meanwhile, Root was pursuing along in his own style as both these batsmen were carrying away the match from Bangladesh’s hands.

Overs 20, Score 110/1

While chasing the target of 306 runs to win, the English team was puzzled by the experience of Mashrafe Mortaza who struck early in third over of the innings while removing Jason Roy who was caught by Mustafizur Rahman after scoring 1 runs.

English openers seemed to be in a bit trouble as 13 runs came of the first four overs. Some sort of punishment was provided by Alex Hales as he thumped two boundaries in the fifth over bowled by Mashrafe Mortaza.



Both Hales and Root carried along after the early blow as they put bad deliveries to boundaries while at the same time rotating the strike.
Hales pummeled on straight over mid-wicket for four more of the last ball of Shakib in the eighth over. In the very next over, Hales yet again took the charge as he thumped Mashrafe Mortaza for a boundary over long-on boundary.

Hales seemed to be in mood as he took charge in Mustafizur Rahman’s over while playing brilliantly of the back foot for four more.
England’s fifty came in the tenth over of the match.

Root also joined the party as he decided to cut loose in Soumya Sarkar’s over while hitting gloriously for a boundary towards deep mid-wicket of the first ball. On the third ball, a slight touch from Root tickled past the keeper for another boundary.

The skipper was replacing the bowlers at regular intervals, however it was of no use as both Root and Hales were carrying along the innings superbly.



After 15 overs, England were 76 for the loss of one wicket.

Hales as usual took the charge once again in Rubel Hossain’s over while thumping him for a boundary towards midwicket.

In the 19th over bowled by Rubel Hossain, Root clips a ball to his pad gently for boundary. In the same over, Hales cut firmly as he it beat the third man while rushing away for four more.

After 20 overs, England were in comfortable position as they were 110 for the loss of one wicket.

Bangladesh Innings

Overs 50, Score 305/6

Tamim had decided to cut loose as he was hitting boundaries one after another and if possible for a maximum whenever he was getting any opportunity. Meanwhile, Mushfiqur Rahim was also providing with necessary support as both the veteran batsmen were carrying one with the pro batting style.

After 35 overs, the score was 184 for the loss of two wickets. Mushfiqur Rahim reached to his fifty as he scored a boundary of the bowling of Root as while hammering one straight of mid-off.

In the next over bowled by Ball, Mushfiqur Rahim scored two consecutive boundaries in order to bring more pace to the score.



Tamim reached to his well-deserved fifty in the 39th over as both the batsmen were creating frustrations for the English side.

After 40 overs, Bangladesh were 223 for the loss of two wickets.

Immediately after the fortieth over, Ali came into ball as Tamim hammered him on the first ball of the over for a huge six over long-on.

In the next over bowled by Wood, Tamim took charge once again as he pummeled one away for another huge six over long leg.

Mushfiqur Rahim also took the charge on the forty fourth over as he hit trwo consecutive boundaries of the bowling of Ball.

The glorious innings of Tamim Iqbal came to an end when he was caught behind by Buttler of the bowling of Plunkett after scoring 128 runs.

On the very next ball, Mushfiqur Rahim got out as he was caught by Hales after scoring 79 runs however Plunkett missed his hat-trick while not been able to put the ball in the right path while bowling to Shakib.

Shakib Al Hasan scored two boundaries of the 46th over bowled by Wood however got out after scoring a quick innings of 10 runs of the bowling of Ball.

Sabbir Rahman was the last one to go as he was caught by Roy of the bowling of Plunkett in the last over. Bangladesh managed to score 305 for the loss of six wickets in the allotted overs.


Overs 30, Score 159/2

Moeen Ali was introduced after the fifteenth over as he conceded four runs in his first over. The English bowlers were not giving any chance to the Bangladeshi batsmen to free their arms as the scoreboard kept on ticking with a gentle pace.



 Meanwhile, Bangladesh also lost their second wicket as Imrul Kayes was caught by Wood of the bowling of Plunkett in the twentieth over when the score was 95.

Mushfiqur Rahim played a glorious shot in the twenty second over as the score also entered into triple for Bangladesh side.

Tamim took charge in the twenty fifth over bowled by Ali as he thumped one away for a huge six over long-off. In the next over, Tamim scored two consecutive boundaries in the next over of Liam Plunkett.

Mushfiqur Rahim and Tamim carried along as the score reached 150 for the loss of two wickets for Bangladesh in 28th over.

After 30 overs, Bangladesh were in a comfortable position as they were 159 for the loss of two wickets.


Overs 15, Score 78/1

After being asked to bat first at the Oval, the Bangladeshi openers started things slow as it seemed that they were judging the nature of the Oval pitch.

Soumya Sarkar took the charge in the fifth over as JT Ball for two consecutive boundaries in the fifth over in order to speed up the run rate.

Tamim also join the action as he pummeled one away for four more of the last ball of Wood’s next over.



After the first ten overs, the run rate was 3.60 however Bangladeshi openers were still on the crease.

The start of eleventh over didn’t bring some good news for the English side as Soumya Sarkar started to cut loose with two boundaries and a maximum henceforth fetching 16 runs from Ball’s over that was eleventh of the innings.

The man with the golden hand i.e. Ben Stokes provided the breakthrough as he removed Soumya Sarkar who was caught by substitute Bairstow after scoring 28 runs.

After 15 overs the score was 78 for the loss of one wicket.
