LEEDS (AFP) - England won the second and final Test against New Zealand by 247 runs at Headingley on Tuesday to clinch a 2-0 series win.

Off-spinner Graeme Swann took a Test-best match return of 10 for 132 to give England, in their final Test campaign before they defend the Ashes, another convincing victory after their 170-run win at Lord s in the first of this two-match series.

Erlier rain delayed England s march to victory in the second cricket test at Headingley as it required two more New Zealand wickets when early lunch was called on the last day Tuesday.

After a 45-minute delayed start because of rain overnight, New Zealand was 219-8 when rain stopped play after 48 minutes of action in the first session.

The Kiwis, who have an unreachable target of 468 to win, added 61 runs in 10.5 overs for the loss of skipper Brendon McCullum for 1 and Tim Southee for 38.

Spinner Graeme Swann took Southee to give him 5-90 for the innings and nine in the match.

As the last recognized batsman, McCullum bore an extra burden to help his side play out for time and pray for rain to force a draw.

But after getting off the mark with a single he lasted only 13 minutes before driving straight back to fast bowler Stuart Broad, who made a great, diving two-handed catch at shoelace height.

McCullum has been symptomatic of New Zealand s batting woes in England. A scorer of three half centuries against the same team at home in March, he s scored only a total of 31 in this series.

Doug Bracewell joined Southee and the pair made light of the deep, dark hole New Zealand was in by smacking 56 runs off 41 balls.

Southee was dropped on 24 off Swann by Jonathan Trott at slip, but the damage was minimal.

Swann and Trott combined to get him for 38 off 41 balls, ending a 52-minute cameo including two sixes and four boundaries.

Swann hadn t taken a test wicket previously at Headingley, but his 9-132 in the match so far represents the best performance by an English spinner on the ground since 1972, when Derek Underwood took 10-82 in a win over Australia.

The rain arrived six minutes later with Bracewell on 19 off 20 balls and Neil Wagner yet to score. The last man was Trent Boult, who hasn t appeared on the field since he aggravated a side strain on Sunday afternoon.
