Govt to nominate Utility Stores Corporation as sugar import agency

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - The government has decided to nominate the Utility Stores Corporation as sugar import agency under the Prime Minister’s Relief Package to combat the issue of expensive local sugar.

According to sources in the Ministry of Industry and Production, the ministry has prepared a summary to nominate the Utility Stores Corporation as the sugar import agency, which will be submitted to the ECC for approval on Wednesday.

According to government sources, the rise in the price of local sugar has increased the dependence of utility stores on imported sugar as the corporation has to pay up to Rs15 per kg extra on the local sugar.

According to the source, the Utility Stores Corporation has proposed to import up to 50,000 metric tons of sugar per month while the utility stores have decided not to buy expensive sugar from local sugar mills indefinitely.
