HONG KONG (AFP) - Hong Kong stocks climbed 0.37 percent Wednesday, boosted by Hutchison Whampoa after it said it had agreed to buy British telecom giant O2 for US$15.2 billion.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index rose 91.17 points to 24,490.77 by lunch on turnover of HK$42.00 billion ($5.42 billion).

But in mainland China the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index fell 1.05 percent, or 38.84 points, to 3,652.57.

The Shenzhen Composite Index, which tracks stocks on China s second exchange, gained 0.33 percent, or 6.44 points, to 1,929.29.
