NEW YORK (AFP) - US stocks Wednesday followed foreign markets lower as investors retreated in the face of concerns about Ukraine and the Chinese economy.
Five minutes into trade, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 61.55 (0.38 percent) to 16,289.70.
The broad-based S&P 500 lost 8.97 (0.48 percent) at 1,858.66, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index declined 21.90 (0.51 percent) to 4,285.29.
The losses were smaller than in Europe, where equity markets in Britain, France and Germany all fell by more than one percent. Leading Asian markets also lost ground.
"Investors are cautious.... as global economic and geopolitical concerns cast a shadow on Wall Street," said a market note from Wells Fargo. "Specifically, uncertainty over upcoming Chinese economic data and tensions between Russia and the Ukraine are weighing on stocks."
