Five minutes into trade, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 31.29 points (0.20 percent) at 15,538.99.
The broad-based S&P 500 dipped 1.66 (0.09 percent) to 1,758.11, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index gave up 4.94 (0.13 percent) at 3,938.42
While there have been a handful of disappointments, investors generally have been pleased with the corporate earnings reports thus far.
Tech giant Apple releases its financial results after the market closes Monday, one of the most eagerly anticipated reports of all.
Wall Street is also looking ahead to Wednesday s conclusion of the Federal Open Market Committee s two-day monetary policy meeting, the first FOMC gathering since the 16-day partial federal government shutdown that ended October 17.
The Fed is expected to keep its stimulus program going, but investors will be watching the FOMC post-meeting statement for clues about when the Fed may begin to pull it back.
