Lahore traffic police chief urges permanent installation of motorcycle side-view mirrors

Updated on:

Lahore's traffic police chief has urged Punjab to introduce motorcycle manufacturing standards requiring permanent side-view mirror fittings to reduce accidents.

LAHORE (Dunya News) - Lahore Chief Traffic Officer Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi has called for the permanent installation of side-view mirrors on motorcycles to improve road safety and prevent accidents.

Shirazi has written to the Punjab secretary for industries, proposing the introduction of appropriate manufacturing standards for motorcycle manufacturers.

According to the letter, 62% of road accidents in Lahore occurred when motorcyclists changed lanes without looking behind or giving proper signals. Riding motorcycles without side-view mirrors increases the risk of accidents, it stated.

The CTO said helmet use had reached 97% on model roads and more than 88% on other roads. He stressed that side-view mirrors were now also necessary alongside helmets to improve riders' safety.

The letter proposed permanently installing the rods supporting side-view mirrors on motorcycles while allowing the mirrors themselves to be detached. It also recommended discouraging motorcyclists from removing their side-view mirrors.

Shirazi said permanent installation would help riders see traffic approaching from behind and from either side, reducing road accidents and loss of life.

The Lahore traffic police chief also requested consultations with relevant authorities and motorcycle manufacturers on the proposed measures.
