ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Pakistan’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has warned that fabricated and misleading information about the law and order situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is being circulated on social media.
According to a statement attributed to the ministry, some posts use artificial intelligence-generated images, old footage and unrelated videos to portray events as developments in the province.
The material reportedly includes videos of factory fires, protests against power outages and incidents in Syria, which are allegedly being shared with misleading headlines and captions linking them to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The ministry said such content was being used to create an impression of unrest and chaos in the region.
Allegations of coordinated online campaign
The statement further alleged that some Afghan and Indian social media accounts were amplifying the content alongside accounts with political interests.
It described the activity as a coordinated propaganda campaign and alleged that it was receiving foreign backing.
However, the allegations concerning the accounts and their alleged coordination have not been independently established in the information provided.
Concerns over misleading digital content
The reported circulation of old footage and AI-generated images highlights the challenges of verifying information during periods of heightened security concerns.
Misleading captions can cause unrelated incidents to be mistaken for current events, potentially creating confusion among the public.
Users are advised to verify the original source, date and location of videos before sharing them, particularly when posts make claims about security incidents.
The distinction between verified developments and unsubstantiated claims remains important for accurate reporting on the situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
