ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The Ministry of National Food Security and Research has allowed the export of 200,000 tonnes of sugar after reviewing available stocks and domestic requirements, officials said on Tuesday.
The decision was taken at a high-level meeting of the Sugar Advisory Board chaired by Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain.
Representatives of the provinces, farmers and the sugar mills association attended the meeting.
Officials reviewed available data on sugar stocks and domestic requirements before approving the export of 200,000 tonnes.
Rana Tanveer said the decision had been taken after considering the country's requirements and available sugar stocks.
He stressed that a balance between the interests of farmers and the sugar industry was necessary for the sustainable functioning of the sector.
The minister also directed sugar mill owners to ensure timely payments to sugarcane growers.
He said protecting farmers' interests remained a priority for the government and that growers should receive their payments without unnecessary delays.
The latest export decision comes as the government seeks to manage domestic sugar availability while allowing the industry to export surplus stocks.
Authorities are expected to continue monitoring domestic availability and market conditions as exports proceed.
