Punjab tightens rules for nikah registrars

Updated on:

Punjab introduces stricter nikah registrar rules, requiring qualifications, digital skills, timely registration, jurisdiction compliance and clean legal records.

LAHORE (Dunya News) - The Punjab Local Government Department has decided to impose new restrictions and conditions on nikah registrars to curb underage marriages and make the marriage registration system more effective.

According to the Punjab Local Government Department, under the new rules, no nikah registrar will be allowed to register a marriage conducted outside the registrar’s designated jurisdiction.

A person seeking appointment as a nikah registrar must be properly qualified and will be required to secure at least 90 percent marks in the examination related to marriage registration.

The Punjab government has also made proficiency in using the internet and mobile phones mandatory for nikah registrars. A person unable to use the digital system will not be appointed as a nikah registrar.

Under the new rules, a nikah registrar will be required to complete the marriage registration process within seven days and forward the record to the relevant Union Council.

The Local Government Department has also stipulated that a person facing a registered criminal case will not be eligible for appointment as a nikah registrar.
