PIMS nursery fire: Fact-finding committee constituted

Islamabad administration formed a committee to probe a deadly fire in PIMS’s MCH Ward nursery, examining its cause, safety measures and rescue response, with a report due within 24 hours.

ISLAMABAD (APP) - The Islamabad district administration on Wednesday constituted a fact-finding committee to determine the cause of a fire that broke out in the nursery of the Mother and Child Health (MCH) Ward at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), killing newborn babies.

According to a notification issued by the District Magistrate, the committee would ascertain the exact cause of the fire and examine factors that contributed to its spread.

The committee, headed by the Additional Deputy Commissioner (General), comprises the Director General of Capital Emergency Services, Capital Development Authority (CDA), Superintendent of Police (City); Assistant Commissioner (Industrial Area); Director General (E&M), CDA; and representatives of IESCO and PIMS. It may also co-opt any other member deemed necessary.

The committee has been tasked with determining the exact cause of the fire, assessing whether adequate and functional fire-safety measures were in place, and evaluating the response time and effectiveness of rescue and firefighting operations.

It will also examine any other matter it considers relevant to the incident.

The district administration directed the committee to submit its report within 24 hours.
