KARACHI (Dunya News) – A new cyber fraud method has emerged in which fraudsters hack citizens’ WhatsApp accounts under the pretext of parcel delivery and then demand money from their relatives and friends.
According to details, a fraudulent group poses as representatives of well-known courier companies and obtains WhatsApp verification codes from citizens.
The fraudsters call citizens and claim that a parcel has arrived for them. They tell the recipient that a code will be sent to their mobile phone for completing the delivery or confirming the address and ask them to share the code with the caller.
As soon as the citizen provides the WhatsApp verification code received on their phone, the fraudsters register WhatsApp on their own mobile device using the victim’s number and take control of the account.
After gaining access to the account, the fraudsters use the contact numbers saved on the victim’s WhatsApp to send messages to relatives, friends, colleagues and acquaintances.
The scammers then request money from the victim’s contacts, claiming that they urgently need financial assistance.
