(Dunya News) - Heavy rainfall in Rawalpindi and Islamabad caused a sharp rise in water levels in Nullah Lai on Wednesday, prompting authorities to sound warning sirens and advise residents living along the waterway to remain alert.

Water levels at Katarian crossed 22 feet following the heavy downpour, raising concerns of flooding in nearby low-lying areas.

Authorities have advised residents living along Nullah Lai to take precautionary measures and move to safer locations if necessary. Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) teams, along with heavy machinery, have been deployed around Nullah Lai and other vulnerable areas to deal with possible flooding.

Saidpur received the highest rainfall in the twin cities, recording 66 millimetres.

Elsewhere, intermittent rain continued in Narowal, resulting in water accumulation in low-lying areas. Rain was also reported in Mandi Bahauddin.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has issued a rain alert for upper and central parts of the country until Friday.

According to the weather department, rain is expected in Islamabad, upper Punjab, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir.

The Flood Forecasting Division in Lahore said low-level flooding was being reported in the Indus River at Kalabagh, Chashma, Taunsa and Guddu barrages. The situation in other rivers across the country remained normal.
