5.4-magnitude earthquake jolts Islamabad, parts of KP

The PMD said the earthquake struck at 12:51pm at a depth of 187 kilometres, with its epicentre located in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region.

A 5.4-magnitude earthquake originating in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region shook Islamabad and several parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Wednesday, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

The PMD said the earthquake struck at 12:51am at a depth of 187 kilometres, with its epicentre located in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region.

Tremors were felt in Islamabad and surrounding areas, as well as Peshawar, Malakand and several other districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or property damage following the earthquake.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the earthquake at a slightly lower magnitude of 5.3. It placed the epicentre about 35 kilometres south-southwest of Jurm in Afghanistan.
