Green Therapy: A simple way to find mental calm in busy cities

Environmental expert Tariq Ali Nizamani says activities such as planting trees, caring for plants and keeping surroundings clean can help people reconnect with their environment

KARACHI (Dunya News) - In today’s fast-paced urban environment, rising living costs, employment concerns, family problems, social pressures and demanding routines are leaving many people struggling with stress, anxiety and emotional exhaustion.

Against this backdrop, experts say that reconnecting with nature and greenery can offer a simple and positive way to promote mental well-being.

Environmental and waste management expert Tariq Ali Nizamani says activities such as planting trees, caring for plants and keeping surroundings clean can help people reconnect with their environment while providing a sense of freshness and calm.

According to Nizamani, spending time around greenery, planting trees and caring for plants can provide a temporary break from the worries and pressures of daily life.

Clean surroundings and contact with nature can refresh the mind and may help reduce feelings of stress.

He noted that in a densely populated city such as Karachi, even small efforts to introduce greenery around homes, streets, neighbourhoods and workplaces could benefit not only the environment but also the overall mental well-being of residents.

Nizamani said disposing of waste properly, maintaining cleanliness, planting trees and caring for them may appear to be small activities, but they provide people with positive and constructive ways to spend their time.

He stressed that the environment should not be viewed merely as a matter of cleanliness or beautification.

A clean and green environment is also linked to comfort, positive feelings and a healthier lifestyle.

“If we spend a little time every day keeping our cities clean and green, that time can also become a source of our own mental peace,” he said.

Experts caution, however, that people experiencing significant psychological distress, anxiety or depression may require professional medical or psychological support.

Spending time in nature, staying physically active and engaging in positive activities can nevertheless complement professional care and contribute to healthier daily habits.
