WASHINGTON (Web Desk) - US President Donald Trump has revived memories of his unprecedented diplomacy with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, posting a photo from their historic 2019 meeting at the inter-Korean border and declaring that the two leaders “get along GREAT.”
The post came as the White House continues to signal that Trump is willing to engage Kim “without any preconditions,” though it remains unclear whether Pyongyang will respond amid its deepening economic, diplomatic and military ties with Moscow.
“Despite the unfriendly look on this particular picture, there are many where we're smiling, Kim Jong Un and I get along GREAT!” Trump wrote Saturday on Truth Social.
Trump and Kim held three face-to-face meetings during Trump's first term — in Singapore in June 2018, Hanoi in February 2019 and Panmunjom in June 2019.
Their third encounter captured global attention when Trump crossed the Military Demarcation Line and briefly stepped onto North Korean soil with Kim, becoming the first sitting U.S. president to do so.
Trump has recently returned to images from his meetings with Kim. In June, he posted a photo from their landmark 2018 summit in Singapore, fueling speculation that he could seek to revive the personal diplomacy that defined his first-term approach to North Korea.
Victor Cha, Korea Chair at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), wrote in an analysis Thursday that Kim could also have an interest in renewing summit diplomacy with Trump, potentially after the U.S. midterm elections this fall.
Cha suggested Pyongyang could pursue a more “revisionist” strategy aimed at further cementing North Korea's status as a nuclear-armed state — potentially creating an opening for renewed high-level talks with Washington.
