ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday directed authorities to accelerate the implementation of the Prime Minister's Apna Ghar Scheme, reaffirming the government's commitment to expanding affordable housing opportunities for low- and middle-income families.
The directive came during a review meeting in Islamabad to assess progress on the housing initiative, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office.
Addressing the meeting, the prime minister said providing every citizen with access to safe and affordable housing remains one of the government's foremost priorities. He said the Apna Ghar Scheme was launched to help low-income and middle-class households achieve the dream of owning a home.
Shehbaz Sharif instructed officials to expedite work on the programme and urged both public and private sector banks to increase financing under the scheme to ensure its successful implementation.
The prime minister also directed the relevant authorities to formulate a comprehensive strategy for both vertical and horizontal housing development models to meet the country's growing housing needs.
During the briefing, officials informed the meeting that banks have so far approved Rs204 billion in financing under the scheme, while Rs27 billion has already been disbursed to beneficiaries.
The meeting was further informed that the Ministry of Housing and Works and the State Bank of Pakistan are conducting weekly reviews to monitor progress and improve implementation of the programme.
The meeting was attended by Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Minister for Housing and Works Riaz Hussain, Minister of State for Finance and Railways Bilal Azhar Kayani, and senior government officials.
