ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a heatwave alert, warning of a high risk of heatstroke as extreme temperatures and humidity push the heat index to dangerous levels in several parts of the country.
According to the PMD, temperatures in Peshawar, Quetta, Bahawalnagar, Dera Ismail Khan and Joharabad ranged between 40°C and 42°C, while the heat index in these cities exceeded 54°C.
The department said Sargodha recorded a temperature of 40.5°C, with the heat index reaching 52.8°C, while Gujranwala and Kot Addu registered a perceived temperature of 52.5°C.
In Okara, the temperature reached 40.5°C with a heat index of 51.5°C, while Attock recorded 38°C, with the heat index climbing to 49.8°C.
The PMD reported that Islamabad recorded 38°C with a perceived temperature of 49.2°C, while Faisalabad registered 40°C and a heat index of 48.3°C.
In Sialkot, the temperature stood at 36°C with 58% humidity. Hyderabad recorded 38°C with a heat index of 45.9°C, while Karachi reported 33°C and a perceived temperature of 38.1°C.
The Met Office warned that the exceptionally high heat index significantly increases the risk of heatstroke and advised the public and relevant authorities to remain vigilant and adopt necessary precautionary measures.
