ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar met María Fernanda Espinosa, a candidate for the post of United Nations secretary-general, to discuss multilateral cooperation, global peace and the future role of the United Nations.
According to Pakistan's Foreign Office, the meeting focused on strengthening the multilateral system, promoting international peace and security, and enhancing the effectiveness of the United Nations in addressing global challenges.
Dar welcomed Espinosa and reaffirmed Pakistan's unwavering support for strengthening multilateralism and preserving the central role of the United Nations in maintaining international peace, security and sustainable development.
During the meeting, the deputy prime minister expressed hope that the next United Nations secretary-general would introduce much-needed institutional reforms and work towards the effective implementation of longstanding UN Security Council resolutions, particularly those concerning Palestine and Jammu and Kashmir.
He also reiterated Pakistan's firm commitment to the principles of the UN Charter, emphasizing respect for international law, global treaties and the rules-based international order.
The two sides also exchanged views on matters of mutual interest, including the evolving international landscape and the importance of international cooperation in addressing global conflicts and humanitarian challenges.
The meeting comes as discussions continue within diplomatic circles over the future leadership of the United Nations following the completion of the current secretary-general's term.
