KARACHI (Web Desk) - Pakistan’s tech exports rose 20 percent year-on-year to $4.2 billion in the first 11 months of fiscal year 2026, finance adviser Khurram Schehzad said on Wednesday.

The surge underscores the growing role of the tech sector as Pakistan seeks to boost exports while emerging from a prolonged economic crisis that drained foreign exchange reserves, widened balance-of-payments pressures, and weakened the currency.

Pakistan is now pursuing export-led growth as part of broader structural reforms under a $7 billion International Monetary Fund (IMF) loan program.

Schehzad said in a social media post that Pakistan recorded a 13 percent year-on-year increase in tech exports to $373 million in May 2026 and expects the number to exceed $4.5 billion in the fiscal year 2026 from the current $4.2 billion in the first 11 months of FY26.

“Pakistan’s tech sector continues to be one of the country’s strongest export success stories, driving digital transformation, creating high-value employment, and expanding Pakistan’s global technology footprint,” he said in a post on X.

“With continued policy certainty and support in Budget FY27, the sector is well-positioned to sustain double-digit growth, attract greater investment, and further strengthen Pakistan’s standing as a leading global technology destination.”

Pakistan’s IT exports have steadily risen in recent years, reaching a record $3.8 billion in 2024–25, according to official data. The momentum has continued into the current fiscal year, with exports up 19 percent year-on-year in the first five months from July to November.

In another social media post, Schehzad highlighted that Pakistani freelancers recorded an 80 percent year-on-year increase, generating a record $1.6 billion in export earnings during the first 11 months of fiscal year 2026.

He said the freelancer community recorded an over 87 percent year-on-year increase, generating $169 million in May this year.

“From technology and creative services to global digital work, Pakistan’s freelancers are earning, innovating, and competing on the world stage,” Schehzad added in another post on X.
