ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - The National Economic Council (NEC) is scheduled to hold an important meeting tomorrow at the Prime Minister’s House as the government moves closer to finalising the federal budget for the fiscal year 2026-27.
The meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, will begin at 3pm and is expected to focus on approving the national development budget and setting key economic priorities for the upcoming fiscal year.
According to the meeting agenda, chief ministers from all four provinces will participate as council members while discussions will cover both federal and provincial development spending plans.
The council will review the development budget for the outgoing fiscal year 2025-26 and examine progress made under existing public sector investment programmes before finalising allocations for the next financial year.
Provincial governments are also expected to present their Annual Development Programmes (ADPs), while the council will consider proposals relating to federal and provincial development expenditures and approve major economic targets for 2026-27.
Participants will receive detailed briefings on key social and economic indicators from provinces, alongside discussions on the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) and broader public sector investment priorities.
The meeting agenda also includes presentation of the performance report of the Central Development Working Party (CDWP) covering the period from April 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026.
Reports regarding approvals granted by the CDWP and the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) for various development projects during the same period will also be reviewed.
In addition, monitoring and evaluation reports concerning major development projects across the country are expected to be presented before participants.
Federal Minister for Planning is scheduled to deliver a comprehensive presentation at the start of the meeting outlining development priorities, investment strategies, and proposed allocations for the next fiscal year.
The NEC meeting is considered a crucial step before the formal announcement of the federal budget, as policymakers attempt to balance fiscal constraints with development requirements and economic growth objectives.
