Rupee gains slightly as dollar falls in interbank market

Updated on:

Pakistani rupee strengthened marginally as US dollar fell 3 paisa to Rs278.47 in interbank trade, reflecting stable market conditions and cautious investor sentiment.

KARACHI (Dunya News) — The Pakistani rupee strengthened slightly against the US dollar in the interbank market on Monday, reflecting continued stability in the country’s currency market.

According to the State Bank of Pakistan, the dollar depreciated by 3 paisa during the first trading session of the week, closing at Rs278.47. This compares with the previous week’s closing rate of Rs278.50, indicating a marginal but steady improvement in the rupee’s position.

Market analysts attributed the minor gain to reduced import demand, improved short-term dollar supply, and better management of external payment pressures. They noted, however, that the currency market remains sensitive to global economic conditions, particularly fluctuations in oil prices and Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves.

Traders said overall market activity remained stable, with participants adopting a cautious approach amid ongoing economic uncertainty. They added that investor sentiment is currently balanced, as expectations of policy stability from the central bank are helping prevent sharp volatility.

Financial experts further suggested that continued inflows from remittances and disciplined monetary management could support the rupee in the near term. However, they warned that any external shock or sudden increase in import demand could quickly reverse the current gains.

The interbank market has shown relative calm in recent sessions, with the rupee gradually stabilising after periods of pressure earlier in the fiscal cycle.
