Officials inspect Lari Adda amid complaints of overcharging and violations

LAHORE (Dunya News) – A major crackdown against overcharging and violations at transport terminals has led to the sealing of more than 20 transport bus stands in Lahore, alongside the arrest of six individuals and the suspension of a terminal administrator, authorities confirmed on Saturday.

The operation was carried out during a high-level visit to the city’s main Lari Adda by Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar, Adviser to the Chief Minister Zeeshan Malik, and Deputy Commissioner Lahore Captain ® Muhammad Ali Aijaz. The officials inspected passenger facilities at the terminal and reviewed compliance with transport regulations, particularly focusing on fare overcharging and unsafe travel practices, including passengers being carried on vehicle rooftops.

Following the inspection, authorities initiated a large-scale enforcement operation against transport operators accused of violating rules and exploiting commuters. More than 20 transport stations were sealed on the spot for serious regulatory breaches. Six individuals were arrested for allegedly charging excess fares and engaging in other violations of transport laws.

Officials said the crackdown was triggered by repeated complaints from passengers regarding unfair pricing, unsafe boarding practices, and a lack of basic facilities at key transport hubs. The action formed part of a broader effort to restore discipline within the public transport sector and eliminate illegal profiteering networks operating at intercity bus terminals.

Transport Minister Bilal Akbar stated that strict measures would continue against those involved in charging fares beyond approved rates. He emphasised that no compromise would be made on the quality and fairness of public transport services, adding that anyone found exploiting passengers would face legal consequences under relevant laws.

CM aide Zeeshan Malik said that the government was determined to dismantle what he described as entrenched transport mafias and eliminate unchecked profiteering. He added that strict legal action would be taken against all those involved in overcharging and regulatory violations at transport terminals across the province.

The DC Lahore stated that authorities were working to ensure higher standards of discipline and service delivery at transport facilities. He stressed that immediate action would be taken against all violations, adding that there was no space for negligence or poor performance within the administrative framework overseeing public transport operations.

The sealed transport terminals remain under observation as investigations continue, while enforcement teams maintain a presence across key points to monitor compliance with fare regulations and safety standards. Authorities indicated that further action may follow based on ongoing inspections and evidence gathered during the operation.
