KARACHI (Dunya News) – The Sindh government has officially introduced the Greater Karachi Regional Plan 2047, setting the stage for a major long-term transformation of Pakistan’s largest city.
The ambitious planning initiative aims to reshape Karachi’s urban future through improved infrastructure, sustainable development and enhanced public facilities as the metropolis prepares for rapid population growth over the next two decades.
According to projections included in the Greater Karachi Regional Plan 2047, the city’s population is expected to surpass 31 million by the year 2047. The forecast highlights the increasing pressure on Karachi’s transport systems, housing, environment and civic services, prompting authorities to accelerate strategic urban planning efforts.
As part of the public engagement process, an open house exhibition for the Greater Karachi Plan 2047 will be organised from May 16 to May 19, 2026 at Khaliq Dina Hall on MA Jinnah Road in Karachi. Citizens, urban planners, architects, environmental experts, academics and members of the business community have been invited to participate and contribute ideas for the city’s future development.
Officials said the exhibition is intended to encourage public involvement in the preparation of Karachi’s long-term master plan. Visitors will be able to review proposed development strategies, planning frameworks and infrastructure concepts designed to address the city’s growing urban challenges.
The Greater Karachi Regional Plan 2047 places special emphasis on transportation networks, environmental protection and the expansion of urban amenities. Authorities aim to develop a modern and sustainable metropolitan structure capable of supporting the city’s expected demographic and economic growth.
Under the proposed framework, planners are examining ways to improve mobility across Karachi through integrated transport systems and better connectivity between residential, commercial and industrial areas. Environmental sustainability has also been identified as a major priority, with attention being directed towards green spaces, climate resilience and improved urban management.
The Sindh government, in collaboration with the Karachi Development Authority (KDA), has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming Karachi into a more organised, efficient and liveable city by 2047. Officials believe the long-term planning model will help guide future investment, infrastructure expansion and land-use management across the wider Karachi region.
Authorities stated that public feedback and expert recommendations will play a central role in shaping the final version of the master plan. Citizens have been encouraged to submit proposals and opinions during the consultation process to ensure that the city’s future development reflects broader public needs and priorities.
The Greater Karachi Regional Plan 2047 is expected to be completed by June 2027, following a comprehensive review and consultation phase involving government institutions, planning experts and community stakeholders.
