Punjab launches modern sewerage system with 100-year lifespan pipes

Punjab begins local production of advanced HDPE sewerage pipes with a 100-year lifespan, aiming to modernise infrastructure, cut costs, and improve sanitation systems province-wide.

LAHORE (Wed Desk) – Punjab has taken a significant step towards modernising its urban infrastructure with the launch of advanced sewerage pipes designed to last up to 100 years, replacing older systems with a lifespan of just 25 years.

The initiative involves the local production of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) lining pipes using advanced technology imported from China. The move aims to ensure the provision of durable and cost-effective materials for sewerage projects across the province.

Punjab Minister for Local Government, Zeeshan Rafique, inaugurated the state-of-the-art HDPE lining pipe factory at a ceremony attended by senior officials, including Special Secretary Shahid Zaman Lak, PMDFC Chairman Imad Iftikhar Malik, Managing Director Syed Zahid Aziz, and WASA representatives.

Officials stated that the project was made possible through technical collaboration between the Punjab Municipal Development Fund Company (PMDFC) and a World Bank team. As part of this partnership, engineers also undertook an exposure visit to the Singapore Water Centre, gaining international expertise that contributed to the project’s development.

The introduction of this technology marks a major improvement in sewerage infrastructure, significantly extending pipe durability and reducing long-term maintenance costs.

Chairman PMDFC Imad Iftikhar Malik played a key role in advancing the initiative. Following his visit to China, modern manufacturing techniques were transferred to Pakistan under the supervision of Chinese engineers.

Meanwhile, NSA Polymer Group Chairman Mian Sohail Nisar and CEO Mian Saad Sohail have announced plans to establish additional factories. The expansion is expected to ensure a steady supply of modern pipes at lower costs, benefiting sewerage schemes throughout Punjab.

Authorities believe the initiative will lead to substantial improvements in urban sanitation systems, supporting sustainable infrastructure development across the province.
