Earlier, South Africa set a formidable target of 188, posting 187/6 in Ahmedabad. Although captain Aiden Markram was dismissed early, Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickleton launched a strong counterattack.

The pair dominated Afghanistan’s bowlers, adding 116 runs in just 61 balls. De Kock brought up his half-century with a pull for four, finishing with 59 runs off 41 balls. Rickleton was even more aggressive, smashing 61 off 28 balls, including five fours and four sixes.

Afghanistan's captain, Rashid Khan, briefly halted the South African charge, dismissing both De Kock and Rickleton in the space of three balls. Lower-order contributions from Dewald Brevis (23) and David Miller (20 not out) helped South Africa reach 187/6.

In reply, Afghanistan’s Rahmanullah Gurbaz led the chase with a blistering start, hitting two fours and three sixes as his team raced to 50 in just four overs. Gurbaz’s aggressive 84 was the backbone of the innings, while Azmatullah Omarzai (22) and Rashid Khan (20) kept the chase alive.

Heading into the final over, Afghanistan needed 13 runs to win. South Africa's Kagiso Rabada, under pressure, bowled a no-ball and a wide, allowing Afghanistan to reach 187.

However, a dismissal on final ball by Farooqi forced the match into the first-ever Super Over of the tournament.
