(Web Desk) - Police in Bengaluru have registered an FIR against actor Ranveer Singh at High Grounds Police Station because he allegedly offended Hindu religious beliefs and showed disrespect to Chavundi Daiva customs of coastal Karnataka.

The case was filed on Wednesday months after the incident that initially sparked controversy.

The complaint relates to an event held on November 28, 2025 during the closing ceremony of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa.

During the event Ranveer allegedly mimicked a Daiva performance inspired by Rishab Shetty's film Kantara: A Legend Chapter 1.

The act reportedly drew sharp criticism on social media with many users accusing the actor of mocking a sacred ritual deeply rooted in the cultural and religious practices of coastal Karnataka.

Ranveer issued a public apology through his Instagram Stories after receiving backlash because he wanted to show regret for his actions which hurt people while he made it clear that he did not mean to insult any group or tradition. The same incident which he apologized for has now turned into legal proceedings.

Police filed the FIR under Sections 196, 299 and 302 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) legal framework. Prashanth Methal a 46-year-old advocate based in Bengaluru filed the complaint. The complaint alleges that the actor made fun of Panjurli and Guliga Daiva expressions through crude comic imitation.

The complainant stated that he showed disrespect to Chavundi Daiva by calling her a "female ghost" which he considered a serious insult to religious beliefs and traditional practices.

The 1st Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court in Bengaluru received the case which was previously handled by the police. The court is scheduled to hear the case on April 8. The actor and his team have not yet provided any feedback about the FIR that was filed against him.
