LHC orders action against malicious social media campaign targeting judiciary

The court clarified that the purpose of this action is not to silence legitimate criticism, but to protect the dignity and independence of the institution.

LAHORE (Muhammad Ashfaq) – The Lahore High Court (LHC) has issued a written order on a petition filed against negative propaganda on social media targeting the superior judiciary.

Justice Ali Zia Bajwa, while issuing the written order of the previous hearing, directed law enforcement agencies to take action against individuals involved in running negative campaigns against the judiciary and those attempting to undermine public confidence in the judicial system.

The court clarified that the purpose of this action is not to silence legitimate criticism, but to protect the dignity and independence of the institution.

The order stated that, like all institutions, the judiciary remains open to fair criticism, and judicial decisions can be criticized at academic, professional, and public levels.

However, the court emphasized that criticism must be made in good faith, using respectful language, and should be limited to the legal reasoning of judgments. Malicious campaigns and character assassination against the judiciary are unacceptable.

The written order further noted that crossing limits by accusing judges of bias or dishonesty is inappropriate, and criticism that weakens public trust in the justice system carries legal consequences.

The Lahore High Court observed that while Article 19-A of the Constitution guarantees freedom of expression, this right is not absolute and is subject to lawful restrictions. Any expression that goes against the glory of Islam, the integrity of Pakistan, national defense, or morality is not permissible.

During the hearing, the Director General of the National Cyber Crime Circle (NCC), FIA, informed the court that individuals involved in negative propaganda against the judiciary have been identified and the matter is being treated with utmost seriousness. The court has adjourned further proceedings on the petition until January 22.
