RAWALPINDI (Dunya News)- The Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) has announced plans to improve Murree Road and construct service lanes with a total estimated cost of Rs9 billion.
RDA Director General Kinza Murtaza told, that the Punjab government had requested proposals from civic authorities to enhance infrastructure in the garrison city.
In response, the RDA submitted two separate projects aimed at upgrading Murree Road, a key route connecting Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
Kinza Murtaza also said that this plan will significantly improve the deteriorated condition of the roads and allow smooth and easy travel.
The first project, valued at 8.1 billion rupees, involves adding service roads on both sides of Murree Road between Liaquat Bagh and Chandni Chowk. Once completed, the main thoroughfare from Marrir Chowk to Faizabad would become signal-free.
She noted that the detailed design would be finalized after the provincial government released the funds. A survey is currently being conducted for land acquisition, which will form a major portion of the project cost.
She further explained, “It is expected that wider roads will improve traffic flow and also enhance the overall appearance of the area. The service lanes will increase the road’s capacity.”
The Director General noted that the last repair of Murree Road was carried out in 2014 following the construction of the Metro Bus elevated track. The second project now focuses on rehabilitating Murree Road from Saddar Flashman’s to Faizabad, at an estimated cost of Rs953 million.
The RDA has formally requested funds from the Punjab government, which is preparing a comprehensive development package for Rawalpindi.
According to a senior district official, the government aims to replicate the successful model used in Lahore, making Rawalpindi more spacious, cleaner, and greener.
From 2026 onwards, residents can expect improvements in water supply, sewerage, pollution control, and other civic amenities.
