DOHA (Dunya News) – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday denounced Israel’s strike in Doha as a “brazen aggression” and a “blatant violation” of Qatar’s sovereignty, urging Muslim nations to stand united against provocations.

He made these remarks during a solidarity visit to Qatar, where he met Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to reaffirm Pakistan’s support.

The strike on September 9 targeted Hamas officials based in Doha. Hamas confirmed that five members, including Humam, son of top negotiator Khalil al-Hayya, were killed alongside Qatari security officer Lance Corporal Badr Saad Mohammed al-Humaidi al-Dosari. Israel admitted responsibility, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stating, “Israel initiated it, Israel conducted it, and Israel takes full responsibility.”

Pakistan-Qatar ties

PM Shehbaz expressed deep sympathies for the lives lost and emphasised Pakistan’s solidarity with Qatar. He appreciated Doha’s constructive mediation in Gaza, warning that Israeli actions were intended to destabilise peace initiatives. Reaffirming fraternal ties, he assured that Pakistan stood ready to support Qatar against unjustified aggression.

Both sides agreed to maintain close coordination on peace, regional stability and Palestinian rights.

Global condemnation

The international community reacted strongly. Qatar labelled the strike “cowardly”, with its PM Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani saying the attack “killed any hope for hostages” in Gaza. The UN Secretary-General António Guterres termed it a “flagrant violation of sovereignty”, while Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, Iran, Jordan and the UAE all issued firm condemnations. Pope Leo called the situation “very serious”.

Pakistan calls for UNSC emergency meeting over Israeli aggression in Qatar

At Qatar’s request, Pakistan has urged the UN Security Council to convene an emergency meeting and welcomed Doha’s move to hold an Extraordinary Arab-Islamic Summit on 15 September under the OIC framework, with Pakistan ready to co-sponsor.

Regional repercussions

Doha has long hosted Hamas’s political bureau, serving as a key venue for mediation talks with Israel. The strike, carried out while Hamas representatives were reportedly discussing a Gaza ceasefire proposal, has cast doubt on ongoing negotiations. Qatar has announced funerals in Doha for those killed, as regional and global leaders brace for the fallout of Israel’s latest escalation.
