Pakistan, Armenia weigh move towards establishing diplomatic ties

Ishaq Dar and Ararat Mirzoyan exchange views in cordial phone conversation

ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) – Pakistan and Armenia have agreed to consider the establishment of diplomatic relations, a development seen as a significant step between the two countries which have yet to formalise ties.

The understanding was reached during a phone call on Friday between Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Armenia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Ararat Mirzoyan.

Dar announced the discussion on X, stating that he and Mirzoyan “held a cordial conversation” and agreed to consider establishing diplomatic relations. The Armenian foreign minister echoed the statement, noting that the dialogue followed “recent developments” and aligned with the vision of greater cooperative engagement, both bilaterally and through multilateral platforms.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Islamabad confirmed that the two sides exchanged views on strengthening future cooperation. Both posts on X reflected a willingness to move beyond longstanding differences and open channels of dialogue.

Pakistan and Armenia

Pakistan and Armenia do not currently maintain formal diplomatic relations. Islamabad has historically supported Azerbaijan in its disputes with Armenia over Nagorno-Karabakh, a stance shaped by regional geopolitics.

Earlier this month, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif welcomed the peace deal between Armenia and Azerbaijan, brokered at the White House Summit by US President Donald Trump. He congratulated both nations, reiterating Pakistan’s support for Azerbaijan while calling the agreement a milestone for regional peace.
