KARACHI (Dunya News) – There is a silver lining for electricity consumers across the country, including Karachi, as monthly fuel cost adjustment may bring power tariffs down.
The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has filed a petition to cut the tariff by Rs1.69 per unit for July under the monthly adjustment mechanism.
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) is set to hear the case today.
According to the petition, electricity generation in July stood at 14.12 billion units. The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) had earlier given the green light for a uniform fuel charges adjustment across the country, meaning K-Electric consumers will also come under the same umbrella.

The figures show that in July, 13.66 billion units were supplied, with the cost of electricity averaging Rs8.18 per unit. Hydropower took the lion’s share, contributing 40.13 percent of the total output.
As per CPPA data: Local coal accounted for 10.64 per cent of generation, imported coal made up 8.07 per cent, gas-based generation stood at 7.74 per cent, imported LNG produced 17.26 per cent and nuclear fuel contributed 9 percent.
If approved, the adjustment will take some burden off consumers’ shoulders at a time when households are already struggling to make ends meet.
