India warns Pakistan of possible flood risk under Indus Waters Treaty

The Indian High Commission notified Pakistani officials about the increased inflow into the river

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – India on Monday contacted second time with Pakistan officially since the May military conflict, informing authorities of release of more water into the Sutlej River.

The Indian High Commission has notified Pakistani officials about the increased inflow into the Sutlej River, indicating that India may release additional water from the Harike Headworks into the river.

Flooding in the Sutlej River after India released water has already affected Pakistan. Thousands of people have been displaced, standing crops on thousands of acres have been destroyed, and losses of livestock continue to rise.

Earlier, following the May conflict, India made its first official contact with Pakistan on Sunday, informing about potential flooding in the Tawi River near Jammu.

Under the provision of the Indus Waters Treaty, India formally notified Pakistan of the possibility of a major flood at the Jammu point. In response, the Government of Pakistan issued an alert.

It is worth noting that India had previously declared the suspension of its implementation of the Indus Waters Treaty. The recent contact marks the first significant communication since the May conflict.
