DARWIN (Reuters) – Racing teams from around the world set off from Darwin on Sunday, embarking on a 3,000-kilometre (1,864-mile) journey through the Australian outback in solar-powered electric vehicles as part of the 2025 Bridgestone World Solar Challenge.
Darwin city, in Australia's Northern Territory, was abuzz with excitement as spectators thronged the starting line to witness the race begin. The finish line is in Adelaide, South Australia.
The event is one of the most prestigious solar car races in the world, challenging teams to engineer innovative and sustainable climate change solutions in the automobile industry.
In what organisers have nicknamed the "Battle of the Fins", four of the competition’s top teams debuted new fin technology on their solar cars to increase stability and improve their cars' aerodynamics, allowing for faster speeds under favourable wind conditions.
