ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The so-called sugar mafia seems to be running out of control, as sugar prices have gone through the roof once again.
According to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, sugar has become costlier by Rs2.15 per kg in just one week, leaving both the government and the public in a fix.
The report shows that the average sugar price across the country has hit Rs181.34 per kg, while gur (jaggery) also climbed nearly Rs2 per kg, reaching Rs243.72 per kg.
Despite loud claims and tall promises by the government, sugar continues to sell well above the official rate in different cities.
Karachi tops the chart with sugar selling at a whopping Rs195 per kg, followed by Islamabad and Rawalpindi at Rs190 per kg. In Gujranwala, Sialkot, Hyderabad, and Larkana, prices stood at Rs185 per kg, while Quetta recorded Rs186 per kg.
Multan saw the lowest but still steep rate of Rs180 per kg.
It is worth noting that the government had earlier announced that sugar would be available at Rs175 per kg, but those promises have clearly gone down the drain.
