Heavy rains batter Karachi for second day, leaving 16 dead

Downpours reported in Shah Faisal Colony, Saddar, Federal B Area, Liaquatabad, Jamshed Road

KARACHI (Dunya News) – Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds resumed on the second consecutive day across various areas of Karachi on Wednesday.

Monsoon downpours were reported in Shah Faisal Colony, Saddar, Federal B Area, Liaquatabad, Jamshed Road, Clifton, Defence, Shahrah-e-Faisal, Frere Hall, Kala Pul, and PECHS. It also rained in Kharadar, Jodia Bazaar, Urdu Bazaar, Burns Road, Lines Area, and the area near Karachi airport.

In addition, heavy rain fell on Tariq Road and surrounding areas, leading to water accumulation on city streets.

Due to the torrential rainfall, seven underpasses in Karachi were closed to traffic as water levels rose several feet. After the rain at Shahrah-e-Faisal near Nursery, heaps of garbage appeared in multiple locations.

Deputy Director of the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), Anjum Nazeer Zigham, stated that the rain that began in the afternoon is expected to continue until 7pm.

He added that thunderclouds are present in the northeastern part of the city, and rainfall is expected across Sindh until August 23. He explained that cloudbursts typically occur in hilly areas.

Meanwhile, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab said that no one can be held responsible for climate change. He added that rainfall caused destruction in Azad Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan, and that Karachi experienced a devastating storm yesterday, with Manghopir recording 235 millimeters of rainfall.

During Mayor Murtaza Wahab’s news conference, rain started pouring again, forcing him to leave the event.

Yesterday’s stormy rainfall has already claimed 16 lives. Today has been declared a public holiday in the city, and courts remain closed.

Damaged vehicles are still on the streets, potholes have formed on University Road due to the rain, electricity has yet to be restored in several areas, and residents are struggling with heat and humidity.

Taking to X, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab called on citizens not to use Shaheed-i-Millat Road at the moment as “work is being carried out to clear the underpasses”.

Please avoid using Shaheed e Millat Road at this point of time. Work is being carried out to clear the underpasses. Alternate of Stadium Road or Shahrah e Quaideen can be used

Karachi Traffic Police reported that several roads and underpasses across the city were closed due to waterlogging from heavy rains.

In District East, Shaheed-i-Millat Road, Tariq Road Underpass, and Drigh Road Underpass towards the airport were shut to traffic.

In District Central, Nazimabad No. 1 and No. 2 Underpasses, Liaquatabad No. 10 Underpass, and Gharibabad Underpass were also closed.
