Residents begin to relocate as operations resume against militants in Bajaur, Khyber

An estimated 300 militants are present in two areas of Mamond tehsil

PESHAWAR (Dunya News) – Authorities have decided to launch operations against militants in Bajaur and Khyber districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa following the breakdown of peace talks.

According to official sources, a jirga in Bajaur’s Mamond tehsil failed after militants refused demands from tribal elders to vacate the area. An estimated 300 militants are present in two areas of Mamond tehsil, which has a population of over 300,000. More than 40,000 residents have already fled.

Sources further revealed that over 350 militants are active in Khyber district, with more than 80% of those in both districts believed to be Afghan nationals.

Malakand Commissioner Abid Wazir said arrangements have been made to accommodate displaced families in 107 government buildings in Khar, with a tent village to be set up at the local sports complex. He assured that all necessary facilities will be provided to those displaced.

Meanwhile, the district administration imposed a curfew from 11:00 am to 11:00 pm on all major roads leading to the district headquarters in Khar.

In Mamond tehsil, a three-day curfew was enforced across approximately 27 localities, starting at 11:00 am on August 11 and lasting until 11:00 am on August 14. Residents were instructed to wrap up all activities by 10:30 am and remain indoors throughout the curfew period.

Authorities issued a warning that any disturbances during this time would be the responsibility of those who violated the curfew. The district administration also noted a noticeable outflow of residents from Mamond tehsil in recent days.
