Karakoram Highway washed away as glacier melting triggers flooding in Hunza

Road link between Pakistan and China was cut off as Parts of Karakoram Highway were washed away.

HUNZA (Dunya News) - Glacier melting in Gilgit-Baltistan region has intensified, causing Hunza River to swell, triggering flash floods in the area, Dunya News reported on Friday.

Parts of Karakoram Highway were washed away due to river erosions in Morkhun area which resulted in cutting off road link between Pakistan and China.

The highway has been closed to all kind of traffic. The overnight rain in Nizampur, Ziarat Kaka Sahib, and Cherat also triggered flash floods. The flooding has cut off the main access route for several villages on the other side of Gojal.

Hundreds of vehicles are stranded on both sides and local residents have been advised to take precautionary measures. Eight people trapped in a flash flood in Khwar area were rescued.
