Death toll climbs to 281 as monsoon rains claim two more lives

At least 675 persons sustained injuries due to monsoon rains since June 26

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - The death toll from recent monsoon rains across the country has climbed to 281 as two more children died in the rain-related incident on Monday, Dunya News reported.

According to the latest report from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), two children have lost their lives in the past 24 hours, bringing the total death toll to 281 while 675 persons sustained injuries due to monsoon rains since June 26.

Punjab is the most affected province, where 151 people have died and 535 have sustained injuries, followed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) with 64 casualties while 79 got injured.

In Sindh, 27 people have died and 40 have been injured due to the rains. In Balochistan, the intensity of the rains has claimed 20 lives, with four people injured. At least nine people were killed and four were injured in Gilgit-Baltistan due to the recent rains.

In Azad Kashmir, two person died and 10 were injured due to recent monsoon rains while in the federal capital Islamabad, eight people died and three sustained injuries.

In total, 1,557 houses have been damaged, and 372 livestock have perished due to rain-related incidents since June 26. The monsoon rains have also damaged 651 kilometres of roads and 12 bridges.

Intense monsoon rains have battered Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Sindh, Balochistan, Azad Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan and Islamabad since June 26, causing urban floods and glacial lake outburst floods in several parts of the country.

Pakistan has received above-normal rainfall this monsoon season, raising concerns of a repeat of the devastating 2022 floods that submerged a third of the country and killed 1,737 people.
