Application against ordinance for appointment of retired judges to election tribunals fixed for hearing

LAHORE (Dunya News) - An application against ordinance 2024 for the appointment of retired judges to election tribunals has been fixed for hearing.

Lahore High Court Justice Abid Aziz Sheikh would hear the application of Salman Akram raja on October 28.

The application had made the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and federal government respondents in the application.

The applicant pleaded with the court to declare the Election Ordinance 2024 for appointment of retired judges to election tribunals illegal and appointment of judges to election tribunals unconstitutional.

Salman Akram Raja requested the court to halt the appointment of retired judges till the final judgment on the plea.

President signed off bill into law

It is pertinent to note that President Asif Ali Zardari has signed off the bill into law to appoint retired high court judges to election tribunals on July 9 to settle electoral disputes.

The Senate had on July 8 passed the Election Amendment Bill while the National Assembly on June 28 amid opposition decry.

ECP forms Election Tribunals

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday formed eight election tribunals in Punjab for general and by-elections.

According to a notification issued by the commission, serving and retired judges have been appointed to the election tribunals which will address election petitions for the national and provincial assemblies.
