LAHORE - Come Rabiul Awal and with it begin preparations for celebrating the birth anniversary of the Holy Prophet (Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
Residential and commercial areas of Lahore, as elsewhere in the country, come alive with traditional activities.
A recent visit to Anarkali showed hustle and bustle in and around the shops of decorative accessories meant for Eid-e-Milad.
Vendors and stallholders do a roaring business as they sell their products with enthusiasm.
“This occasion helps us earn a handsome amount in a few days,” said a trader.
Eid-e-Milad is celebrated by Muslims all over the world with zeal and joy on 12th of the month (third one of Islamic calendar) every year. The prophet lovers commemorate the life and times of the Founder of Faith with deep veneration.
In Pakistan, the day is celebrated as a festival as homes, markets and government and private buildings are bedecked with lights.
All manner of men, women and children get excited on this day. Children collect funds in streets to celebrate Eid-e-Milad with commemorative rituals. Most people contribute to it with fervour.
The decoration of streets and houses with flags, fancy lights, and banners reflects people’s verve.

On the dawn of 12th of Rabiul Awal, army marks the event with 31-cannonball salute in Islamabad and 21-cannonball salute in each provincial capital. A public holiday is announced every year, making it a national event.
Among other activities many people cook and distribute food among neighbours and the needy. One can feel the aroma of victuals in the air.
People also arrange assemblies of Naat Khwani - recitation of poetic verses to praise Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Peace be upon him). It is one of the most widely practiced tradition on the occasion, especially among the Muslims of South Asia.
Another tradition is the arrangement of sessions wherein scholars throw light on various aspects of Seerah (the life of Allah’s Messenger).
The teachings of peace and love for humanity epitomised by Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) are preached in sermons and speeches.
“The true essence of Eid-e-Milad is in learning and following the teachings of Hazrat Muhammad,” says a scholar.
“Eid-e-Milad unites Muslims to remember the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), according to another scholar.
Milad Jaloos (processions) are also arranged where participants pay tribute to the exalted prophet by reciting Darood.

Muslims the world over celebrate the event according to their resources. In a way, it transcends borders and unites people. It is also considered a binding force which unites us as a nation and brings festivity to the public.
This day also provides another opportunity to pay tribute to the Prophet (PBUH) for his benevolence towards humanity.
No doubt, he brought countless people out of the darkness of ignorance through his teachings and noble example.
